  • Print documents provided by St. Olaf College archives and Dr. & Mrs. P. B. Phillips.

About the Oral History Project

This project obtains an oral history of both the Tuskegee Institute Summer Education Program (TISEP) and the Tuskegee Institute Community Education Program (TICEP). Participants (Tutors, and Tutees) were interviewed and a transcript and a video was prepared for each interview. Access to the transcripts and videos will be provided when available. The TISEP/TICEP HISTORY AND IMPACT Project was a community outreach education program. (1965 – 1968) (concurrent with and in support of the Civil Rights Movement).

About TISEP

The Tuskegee Institute Summer Education Program (TISEP) Provided expanded services to fight illiteracy and promote education in twelve counties through a funded grant program. The program also produced a newspaper, “The T.I.S.E.P. Reporter”, covering the program activities at its various sites.

About TICEP

The Tuskegee Institute Community Education Program (TICEP) Replicated the summer program and also added social services and health, advisory and referral services to the tutees and their families. This program also produced a newspaper, “The T.I.C.E.P. Journal”, covering the program activities at its various sites.

About the 60’s

The young 3Ts heroines and heroes of the 60’s experienced many indignities, insults and sometimes threats to their lives. Because of their deep commitment to freedom and justice for all, they could not and did not walk away. Oral History Project Meetup

On June 27, 2024, the TISEP-TICEP Coordinating Committee including (Dr. Walter Bowers, Mrs. Judith V. Phillips, Dr. Percival B. Phillips, Dr. Joan Hamby Burroughs, and Mr. Calvin Austin) gathered at Tuskegee University for their first reunion since 2018, reflecting on the vibrant history of the 3 T’s Movement from the 1960s.
